Premiership football star talks social media marketing

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has come up with five reasons why social media marketing ‘works’.

In an interview with smartinsights.com, the football veteran explains that branding on social media is integral – though he finds himself uncomfortable with the term ‘Brand Barton’.

“That said, I’ve realised that the fact is that we’re all brands, and the word brand is just marketing speak for how you make people feel and how they end up talking about you,” he claimed.

Furthermore, he suggests that results on social media – which he dubs a ‘game changer’ on joeybarton.com - don’t just happen overnight. It takes a lot of time, hard work and engagement to build followers and create a community.

He cites his own Twitter account as an example, saying that just having a profile isn’t enough – it needs to be used.

His final three tips include creating your own social media hub through Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and a plethora of other social media platforms, knowing that anyone can be a fully-fledged publisher and ignoring the fear that comes with starting a conversation.

“I was hesitant and excited to use the comment system on my site,” he said. “I am keen to open the floor to other people and have the debate, take the considered feedback – it was hard not to be scared about that.”
